David Bowie (que assina a produ\u00e7\u00e3o do \u00e1lbum) faz os backings vocals e toca piano e org\u00e3o. Supostamente, a can\u00e7\u00e3o foi escrita por Iggy Pop e Ricky Gardiner na Berlim S-Bahn e \u00e9 vagamente baseada em um poema de Jim Morrison. H\u00e1 mais de 30 covers conhecidas de \u201cThe Passenger\u201d e uma das vers\u00f5es mais celebradas da can\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 a do Siouxsie And The Banshees, presente no \u00e1lbum de covers \u201cThrough the Looking Glass\u201d, de 1987 &#8211; o R.E.M. registrou uma vers\u00e3o sensacional no programa Later with Jools Holland, em outubro de 1998, e a lan\u00e7ou com b-side do single &#8220;At My Most Beautiful&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A vers\u00e3o \u201cO Passageiro\u201d, do Capital Inicial, \u00e9 assinada por Bozzo Barretti e Dinho Ouro Preto e est\u00e1 presente no disco \u201cEletricidade\u201d, de 1991, tendo sido um dos grandes sucessos do \u00e1lbum ao lado de \u201cTodas as Noites\u201d e \u201cKamikase\u201d. Posteriormente, o Capital Inicial gravou \u201cO Passageiro\u201d nos discos \u201cAo Vivo\u201d (de 1996, sem Dinho Ouro Preto), \u201cAc\u00fastico MTv\u201d (2000) e tamb\u00e9m no DVD \u201cLual MTV\u201d (2000).
